How to use Running Pace Calculator

  1. Enter a distance and choose kilometers or miles.
  2. Enter the elapsed hours, minutes and seconds for that distance. Use zero where needed.
  3. The average pace in both units and the average speed update as you change the fields.

Example: Running Pace Calculator

Find the average pace for a five-kilometer run completed in 30 minutes.

You add
Distance 5 km; time 0 hours, 30 minutes, 0 seconds.
You get
Average pace is 6:00 min/km and about 9:39 min/mi. Average speed is 10.0 km/h, about 6.2 mph.

Options

Distance unit
Choose km or international miles. The page converts one international mile as exactly 1.609344 km.
Elapsed time
Add the full time including pauses if you want overall pace. Exclude pauses only if you want moving pace from a separate moving-time figure.

Supported inputs and limits

Distance must be 0.1–1000 in the chosen unit, and elapsed time must be 1 second to 168 hours. Hours are whole numbers from 0 to 168; minutes and seconds are 0 to 59. The result is average pace across the entire entered time, not a split-by-split or gradient-adjusted prediction. Displayed pace rounds to the nearest second and speed to one decimal; very fast mathematical inputs may show a pace below one second per unit. No route, GPS or training data is read.

Pace arithmetic and units

Checked 2026-09-29. Divide elapsed seconds by distance to get seconds per kilometer or mile. Divide distance by elapsed hours to get average speed. The NIST international-mile conversion is exactly 1609.344 meters, so a mile is 1.609344 kilometers. For the worked 5 km in 1800 seconds, 1800 ÷ 5 is 360 seconds, or 6:00 min/km. This is a whole-outing average, not a physiological or race-time prediction.

Questions about Running Pace Calculator

Do stops count in the pace?

They count if they are included in the elapsed time you enter. Use moving time instead when you want a moving-pace result.

Why are min/km and min/mi different?

A mile is 1.609344 km, so the time to cover one mile is longer than the time to cover one kilometer at the same average speed.

Is this my fastest kilometer?

No. The page divides the full entered time by the full entered distance. It does not receive split times and cannot show a fastest section.

Can I enter 1 hour 2 minutes 30 seconds?

Yes. Put 1 in hours, 2 in minutes and 30 in seconds. The result uses all 3750 seconds.
