How to use Speed Converter
- Under What are you entering?, choose A speed or A pace.
- Enter the Value: a number for speed, or a time such as 6:00 for pace.
- For a speed, choose Speed unit of the value; for a pace, choose Pace unit.
- Choose Convert the speed to and, if needed, Decimal places.
- The result and reciprocal pace update as you change the values.
Example: Speed Converter
Convert kilometers per hour to meters per second.
Options
- What are you entering?
- A speed is distance per time; a pace is time per distance. Choose the input type before entering a value, because a reciprocal cannot be treated as an ordinary unit change.
- Decimal places
- Choose 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 places for a non-whole speed result. Clock pace is rounded to the nearest second except for very short subsecond paces.

How speed and pace relate
Speed divides distance by time, while pace divides time by distance. Ten kilometers per hour means one kilometer takes one tenth of an hour, or 6:00 per kilometer. The converter calculates from the underlying speed before rounding the displayed clock pace, so a rounded result is a presentation choice rather than a new input.
Questions about Speed Converter
Is 6.5 pace the same as 6:30 pace?
Yes. A bare 6.5 is decimal minutes, so the half minute is 30 seconds. A colon makes the minutes and seconds explicit. Choose per kilometer or per mile before converting.
Why does a faster speed give a lower pace number?
Pace measures the time needed for one unit of distance. At 10 km/h, one kilometer takes six minutes. Increasing speed makes that time shorter.
What pace does zero speed produce?
There is no finite minutes-per-kilometer or minutes-per-mile value at rest. The tool reports that boundary in the pace row instead of displaying zero.
Are knots and miles per hour the same?
No. A knot is one nautical mile per hour, or 1.852 km/h. A mile per hour uses the international land mile, which is 1.609344 km. Select the exact source unit on the form.
