How to use Quiz and Exam Builder
- Edit Question definitions as a JSON array, or choose a UTF-8 question JSON file to replace that editor input. Give each question a distinct ID and either multiple-choice or short-answer type.
- For multiple choice, enter 2 to 8 choices and the correct zero-based index: 0 means the first original choice. For short answers, list the exact accepted answers and choose whether case matters.
- Set the title, 1 to 6 versions and an integer seed. The seed makes question and choice order repeatable; a small question set may produce repeated arrangements.
- Optionally enter responses by original ID, for example {"q1":1,"q2":"H2O"}. Choice responses use original definition indices, not the letters printed on a shuffled version. Blank responses remain unanswered.
- Generate exam-version-1.html and any later versions. Open the student HTML files in a browser to print; this tool does not create PDFs.
- Keep exam-answer-keys.html and exam-project-and-keys.json separate from learner copies. exam-scoring.json records the entered-response score. The project JSON contains answers and is not the question-array format accepted by the file input.
Example: Quiz and Exam Builder
Using the two sample questions, answer the original q1 with index 1 for 4 and q2 with H2O. Their assigned points are 2 and 3, for a total of 5.

More details
Question JSON is limited to 500,000 characters and an imported file to 500,000 bytes.

Version count is 1 to 6 and seed 0 to 4,294,967,295.
Short answers use trimmed, whitespace-normalized exact matching with optional case sensitivity, not semantic grading.
No delivery, student-account tracking, proctoring, PDF generation or remote grading occurs.
Where your input is processed
This tool does not upload your inputs. See the limits for anything saved on your device.
Keep original answers separate from version letters
A shuffled version can move both the questions and the choices. Its separate key gives the correct printed letter for that version. The response scorer instead reads original question IDs and original choice indices. If you collect answers from a printed version, translate its letters back to the original choice before scoring here; entering a displayed letter or its position as though it were the original index can mark an answer incorrectly.
Questions about Quiz and Exam Builder
Are answers hidden from the student exam files?
Printable exam HTML contains prompts, choices and blank answer space. Keys are exported separately; do not distribute the project-and-keys JSON to students.
How are short answers scored?
They must match an accepted answer after trimming and whitespace normalization. Case sensitivity is a per-question setting; synonyms are not inferred.
What does the shuffle seed control?
It makes the order of questions and choices reproducible. It is for version preparation, not security or guaranteed unique exam arrangements.
