A plain number, for example 12.

Enter `5 ft 7 in` to convert that measurement instead of the value above.

How to use Length Converter

  1. Enter the Value, for example 12.
  2. Choose Convert from, such as Inches (in).
  3. Choose Convert to, such as Centimeters (cm).
  4. Leave Decimal places at 6, or pick 0, 2, 4 or 8.
  5. The Result and Factor update as you change the values.

Example: Length Converter

Convert inches to centimeters.

You add
Value: 12. Convert from: Inches (in). Convert to: Centimeters (cm). Decimal places: 4.
You get
The result reads 12 in = 30.48 cm. The Factor row says 1 in = 2.54 cm, and the In millimeters row says 304.8 mm.

Options

Feet and inches (optional)
Takes a labelled entry such as 5 ft 7 in instead of the Value field, so the two numbers are never guessed from one figure.
Decimal places
Sets display rounding to 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 places. The conversion runs through stored millimeter factors, so a rounded answer is never reused.
Convert from / Convert to
Nine units: millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards, miles and nautical miles.

Supported inputs and limits

Nine length units are supported, and the entered value is capped at 1 quadrillion in the chosen unit. Rounding is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 decimal places. Feet and inches must be typed in a labelled form such as 5 ft 7 in; a bare decimal such as 5.5 is read as a single number of feet. Area and volume scale by the length factor squared or cubed and are separate tools.

Decimal feet are not feet and inches

A value of 5.5 ft means five and a half feet, not five feet five inches. A labelled entry removes the guess: the tool reads the number before ft as feet and the number before in as inches, then adds them. Both definitions are exact before display rounding.

How many decimal places you need

The setting changes only what is printed. Two places suit a furniture measurement, while a machining tolerance may need four or six. Convert once to the unit you need instead of converting a rounded intermediate value again.

Questions about Length Converter

Is 5.5 feet the same as 5 ft 5 in?

No. 5.5 feet is five and a half feet, which equals five feet six inches. Use Feet and inches when the measurement is already split.

Why does converting the answer back differ slightly?

Each screen shows your chosen precision. The internal number keeps full precision and passes through millimeters, so 12 inches to centimeters and back returns 12.

How accurate are the factors?

The imperial units use their exact international definitions: one inch is 0.0254 meters, one foot is 0.3048 meters, one mile is 1609.344 meters and one nautical mile is 1852 meters.

Does it handle nautical miles?

Yes. A nautical mile is 1.852 kilometers, the international definition used for air and sea distances.
