To convert square feet to square meters, multiply the area by 0.09290304. This is the square of the foot-to-meter factor, because an area has two dimensions. Area Converter applies the correct area factor rather than treating a square-foot figure as a length.

Start with an area or with dimensions

Suppose an illustrative rectangular room measures 12 feet by 10 feet. Its floor area is 120 square feet. Converting that area gives 11.1483648 square meters before display rounding.

Enter 120 in the area tool, select square feet as the source and square meters as the destination. Inspect the factor and choose a precision appropriate to the measurements. Two decimal places would display 11.15 square meters.

As a separate check, convert each side using Length Converter. Twelve feet is 3.6576 meters and ten feet is 3.048 meters. Multiplying those converted dimensions returns the same unrounded area.

Do not multiply 120 by 0.3048. That is a length conversion factor and would produce a number with the wrong dimensional meaning. It is a common mistake because both calculations mention feet and meters.

Account for the shape before converting

If a room is not rectangular, its area cannot be found from only the longest width and length unless that method describes the shape accurately. Divide an irregular floor plan into sections or use Shape Area Calculator for an appropriate supported shape.

A unit converter does not subtract pillars, alcoves or unusable floor space. Those are measurement decisions to make before entering the final area. Keep a sketch showing which sections you included so someone else can reproduce the total.

Preserve enough precision for the next step

Use unrounded intermediate measurements when comparing the two calculation methods. Rounding each side early can introduce a small difference in the multiplied result. Round the final area for display, while retaining the underlying figures if you will use them again.

The area converter covers metric areas and named international customary areas, including acres. It does not include regional land units such as bigha or tsubo. Do not choose a similarly named unit as an approximate replacement without an independently established conversion.

An area calculation also does not determine a material order. Packaging increments, cuts, offcuts and the actual installation layout require separate allowances. Record those choices separately from the exact unit conversion.
