A plain number, for example 2.5.

US liquid and imperial gallons are different sizes, so each measure is named in full.

How to use Volume Converter

  1. Enter the Value, for example 1.
  2. Choose Convert from, such as US liquid gallons (US gal).
  3. Choose Convert to, such as Liters (L).
  4. Set Decimal places. The result updates as you change the values.
  5. Read the Result and the liquid measures note when a US or imperial unit is involved.

Example: Volume Converter

Convert cubic meters to liters.

You add
Value: 1. Convert from: Cubic meters (m3). Convert to: Liters (L). Decimal places: 2.
You get
The result reads 1 m3 = 1000 l, and the table repeats 1000 L in the litres row.

Options

Convert from / Convert to
Fifteen units: milliliters, liters, cubic meters and centimeters, cubic inches, feet and yards, and separately named US liquid and imperial fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons.
Decimal places
Rounds the printed result to 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 places. Whole results keep every digit, and a small nonzero result is never printed as zero.

Supported inputs and limits

The tool covers metric volume, cubic inch, foot and yard volumes, and labelled US liquid and imperial measures. The entered value is capped at 1 quadrillion in the selected unit. Dry measures are not included, cups are left out because their size varies, and the tool never estimates mass from density. US and imperial systems stay named in full and are never mixed.

A gallon is not one size

A US liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 liters. An imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters, about 20 percent larger. Keeping the system inside the unit name is the difference between a correct conversion and a quiet error.

NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8: volume conversion factors

Cubic units come from their length

One international inch is exactly 0.0254 meters, and a cubic inch is that length cubed, which gives 16.387064 milliliters. The tool stores the cubic factors directly, so a rounded length is never cubed again.

Questions about Volume Converter

Which gallon does the tool use?

Whichever you choose. One US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 liters and one imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters, so the two are separate named units.

Why is 1 US gallon shown as 3.785412 liters?

The exact factor is 3.785411784 liters, but the result prints at six decimal places by default. Raise Decimal places to 8 to see more; the conversion never uses the rounded figure.

Is a cubic centimeter the same as a milliliter?

For this converter they are the same size, and both are listed so you can enter or read either name.

Does this convert ounces by weight?

No, this is volume only. Turning fluid ounces into grams or ounces of weight needs the ingredient's density, which the tool does not assume.
