Example: Add Page Numbers to PDF
Number the second page of a two-page PDF that already prints its own numbers.
Options
- Pages to number
- A typed range wins over Skip the first page, so 2-6 numbers physical pages 2 through 6. With the range empty, Skip the first page leaves out page 1.
- First number
- The value lands on the first selected page, which is not always page 1.
- Number style
- The totals in 1 of 5 count numbered pages, so a skipped cover does not inflate the total.

Printed numbers are not physical page positions
A page range selects physical pages, and the first selected page takes the start value. A style such as 1 of 5 counts only that selection, which is why a six-page file can end at 5 of 5. The result reports both figures before you share the file.
Questions about Add Page Numbers to PDF
Why does the total say 5 when my file has 6 pages?
The total counts the pages you numbered, not the pages in the file. The result reports both numbers.
Can I number only some of the pages?
Yes. Type a range such as 2-6 in Pages to number, or leave a cover out with Skip the first page. Pages left out keep no label.
Does it remove a page number that is already printed?
No. The new label is drawn on top of the page content. If a page already shows a number you may end up with two, so check those pages.
Will the number look straight on a landscape page?
Yes. The label is placed against the visible page box, so a rotated page keeps the number upright instead of turning it sideways.
