How to use Online Notepad
- The box opens on a short sample so the page is useful straight away. Nothing is saved yet, and editing the text makes it yours.
- Type or paste your own note. From the first keystroke the page keeps what is in the box in this browser as you go.
- Choose what you want to do: keep it in this browser, export a text copy, or delete the saved copy. Changing the choice on its own only describes it.
- Select Apply to carry the choice out. The status line above the result says what happened, or why it could not.
- Keep a copy somewhere else if the note matters. Clearing site data, private windows and a full storage quota each remove it.
Example: Online Notepad
Start from the sample and decide whether the note is worth keeping between visits.
Options
- Save in this browser
- Writes the note to this browser's local storage for this site, so it comes back the next time you open the page on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and the opening sample is not saved until you edit it or select Apply.
- Export a text copy
- Builds a plain text download named notepad-note.txt when you select Apply. It works even when the browser refuses to store anything, which makes it the safe choice for a note you care about.
- Delete the saved copy
- Removes the stored note from this browser when you select Apply, and leaves the text in the box untouched. The page's Clear button empties the box without deleting the stored copy, so removing data is always a deliberate choice.
Supported inputs and limits
Where your input is processed
This tool processes your input in this browser. Your text and files are not uploaded to UseFreeTools. Check this tool's limits for anything it may save on your device.
What local storage can and cannot do
Local storage is a small key and value store that a browser keeps for one origin on one device. It survives a reload and a restart, which is what makes a note feel saved, but it is not a backup. The browser clears it when space runs short, the visitor clears it from settings, and a private window discards it when the window closes. It is also readable by any script served from the same origin, so it is the wrong place for a secret. An exported text file is the honest fallback: a real copy the visitor holds, which works in every case where storage does not.
Questions about Online Notepad
Why does the page open with text already in the box?
That opening line is a sample, and the page says so above the box. It is not saved anywhere, so the first thing you type replaces it and the note then belongs to you. A note already saved in this browser opens instead of the sample.
Where is my note stored?
In this browser's local storage for usefreetools.net, on this device only. There is no account, no sync and no server copy, so the note does not appear on another device. Reopening the page reads the stored note back and reports it in the status line.
Why did the page say it could not save?
The browser refused the write. That happens in private windows, when site storage is blocked, and when the quota is full. The text stays in the box, so export a text copy before you close the page.
Can I keep a password in here?
No. Anything in local storage can be read by scripts running on this site and by anyone who can use this browser profile, and the export is an ordinary unencrypted text file. Use a password manager for credentials.
How do I remove everything?
Choose Delete the saved copy and select Apply to remove the stored note, then clear the box with the page's own Clear button. The two steps are separate on purpose: emptying the box on its own never deletes a saved copy, and changing the choice without selecting Apply does nothing at all.
