The nonblank lines become 1. First, 2. 40 is plain text and 3. Last. The blank line and final line break remain.

Supported inputs and limits

Up to 200,000 characters and 20,000 lines. Starting numbers are whole values from 1–999,999 and the resulting sequence must stay within the stated numeric range. Only a decimal prefix matching the selected period, closing parenthesis, colon, dash or tab rule is removed. Blank lines remain unnumbered; CRLF, CR, LF and a final line break are preserved. Check numbered content before stripping prefixes.

Prefixes and content are different

A line number is extra text at the start of a line. Removal therefore needs a clear boundary, such as a number followed by the selected punctuation and space. Keep a copy of the original when the document contains dates, quantities or numbered headings.

Questions about Line Numbering Tool

Will it remove a number that belongs to my text?

Removal looks for the selected number-prefix pattern. A leading digit alone is not enough. Choose the separator carefully and review lines that already begin with numbers.

Do empty lines receive numbers?

Blank lines stay in place and receive no number. A trailing line break is preserved, so paragraphs and the final line ending do not silently merge.

Can numbering start after one?

Set the starting value before adding or reformatting numbers. The result follows the selected sequence, rather than treating old prefixes as new starting values.

Why did a prefix remain after removal?

Its spacing, punctuation or number shape did not match the rule. Adjust the selected prefix format instead of stripping arbitrary leading characters.
