How to use Mass and Weight Unit Converter

  1. Enter the Value, for example 1.
  2. Choose Convert from, such as Pounds (lb).
  3. Choose Convert to, such as Kilograms (kg).

Example: Mass and Weight Unit Converter

Convert stones to kilograms.

You add
Value: 11. Convert from: Stones (st). Convert to: Kilograms (kg). Decimal places: 4.
You get
The result reads 11 st = 69.8532 kg. No force is calculated, and the note restates that one stone is 14 pounds.

Options

Stones and pounds (optional)
Takes a labelled entry such as 11 st 4 lb instead of the Value field. A single figure such as 11 st also works.
Decimal places
Rounds the printed result to 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 places. A pound-to-kilogram result usually needs four or six.
Convert from / Convert to
Nine units, including three separately named tons: the metric tonne, the short ton of 2000 pounds and the long ton of 2240 pounds.

Supported inputs and limits

Supported units are milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tonnes, ounces, pounds, stones, short tons and long tons. The entered value is capped at 1 quadrillion in the selected unit. Stones and pounds come from a labelled entry such as 11 st 4 lb, where 11.5 st would instead mean eleven and a half stone. These are mass units, so the tool applies no gravity and returns no force in newtons.

Why 11 st 4 lb is not 11.4 st

Stones and pounds are a mixed unit, like feet and inches. The digit after the decimal point is not a count of pounds unless someone defines it that way. Entering the pair lets the tool multiply the stones by 14, add the pounds and convert the total.

Three tons with three masses

The word ton carries a different mass depending on where it is used. The metric tonne is 1000 kg exactly, the US short ton is 907.18474 kg and the UK long ton is 1016.0469088 kg. Each one is named in the unit list.

Questions about Mass and Weight Unit Converter

Is weight the same as mass?

Not in physics. Mass is how much matter an object contains and does not change with location. Weight is a force that depends on gravity, so this tool converts mass only.

Which ton does the tool use?

All three are separate. A metric tonne is 1000 kg, a US short ton is 2000 pounds or about 907.18474 kg, and a UK long ton is 2240 pounds or about 1016.0469088 kg.

Why does 1 pound convert to 0.453592 kilograms?

That is the printed result at six decimal places. The exact factor is 0.45359237 kilograms per pound, so choose 8 places to see more digits.

How do I convert stones and pounds together?

Type the pair into Stones and pounds, for example 11 st 4 lb. One stone counts as 14 pounds and the tool reports the kilogram value for the total.
