JPEG and PNG images only, up to 20 in one run. Every image is converted to the same format.

    PNG output ignores this setting.

JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels use this color. Use a hex value such as #ffffff.

How to use Convert to WebP

    1. Add the JPG or PNG images you plan to publish, up to 20 at a time.
    2. Leave Convert to on WebP, which is where this page opens.
    3. Set the quality, then select Convert.
    4. Compare the reported sizes and download the WebP files that suit the page.

    Example: Convert to WebP

A large photograph that needs a lighter copy for a web page.

    You add
team-photo.jpg, 2400 by 1600 pixels, quality 0.9. Convert to WebP.
    You get
team-photo.webp at 2400 by 1600 pixels, reported with the JPG size and the WebP size. Keep both files until you have compared them on the page.

    Options

    Convert to
The page opens on WebP because web delivery is the job here, and WebP keeps transparency. The list still offers JPEG and PNG when a different target is needed.
    Quality for JPEG and WebP
Start at 0.9, then compare the detail against the file size. Lower values shrink the file and soften fine edges first.

    Supported inputs and limits

Input formatsJPEG and PNG only; WebP is refused
Batch sizeUp to 20 images per run
Output formatWebP, lossy at the quality you choose
WebP is made for the web: current browsers read it and the file is often smaller than the JPG or PNG it came from, which the result line lets you check rather than promise. This page accepts JPEG and PNG files only: a WebP is refused with a message instead of being re-encoded, and the file picker offers JPEG and PNG files on its own. A run accepts up to 20 images, 12 MiB each, 20 MiB in total and 40 megapixels per image. WebP output here is lossy at the quality you choose and it keeps transparency, so a transparent PNG needs no background color. Older desktop software and some print services still do not open WebP, so keep the original when the file has to travel.

    Where a WebP copy helps

A WebP file can cut the bytes a page has to send, but only when the converted file is actually smaller, and only the result line can tell you that for your image. Quality matters more than format on photographs: a low-quality WebP can look worse than a good JPG at a similar size. Keep the original file as well, especially when a print service or an older program will need to open it later.

    Questions about Convert to WebP

Will a WebP file open everywhere?

Every current browser shows it, which is why it suits a web page. Older desktop programs and some print services still cannot, so keep the JPG or PNG alongside the WebP when the file has to be opened elsewhere.

    Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP stores an alpha channel, so a transparent PNG logo converts without a background color and stays transparent. That is the main difference from the JPEG target.

    What quality should I choose?

Start at 0.9 and compare how the image looks with how large the file is. A lower value can save a useful amount of space but softens fine detail.

What if I add a WebP file?

It is refused with a message, because this page prepares JPEG and PNG images for the web rather than re-encoding a file that is already WebP. Use the WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG page for that file.

Can I turn WebP back into JPG or PNG?

Yes. The WebP to JPG and WebP to PNG pages use the same converter with a different target, so a round trip works when another program insists on those formats.
