How to use WhatsApp Link Generator

  1. Type the number in international format, country code first. The result lists the digits it will use under Phone number.
  2. Write the message you want waiting in the chat box, or clear the field for an empty box.
  3. Choose the wa.me short link or the api.whatsapp.com form, then select Generate.
  4. Open the finished link on a phone before you publish it, so you can see which chat it opens.

Example: WhatsApp Link Generator

Prepare a click-to-chat link for a shop that takes enquiries.

You add
Phone number 15550100100, message Hello! I would like to ask about your opening hours., link style wa.me short link.
You get
https://wa.me/15550100100?text=Hello%21+I+would+like+to+ask+about+your+opening+hours. The result also reports 11 phone digits and shows the api.whatsapp.com form of the same link.

Options

Link style
The wa.me short link is short enough to print under a poster or fit in a caption. The api.whatsapp.com form spells the phone parameter out, which some link checkers read more easily. Both open the same chat, and the result shows the other form underneath so you can compare them.
Pre-filled message
Whatever you type arrives in the chat box, ready to edit. Leave it empty and the chat opens with nothing written. The text travels in the address, so anyone holding the link can read it.

Supported inputs and limits

The number must hold 7 to 15 digits in international format, country code first and no leading 0. Spaces, +, dashes, dots, brackets and slashes are removed for you, and letters are refused. The message is capped at 1,000 characters and the finished link at 2,000 characters. This page builds a link and sends nothing: WhatsApp opens on the visitor's device, and the text only appears in the message box then. The link cannot check whether the number has a WhatsApp account, and it adds no tracking parameters. Because the number and message sit in the address, both can turn up in browser history, shared screenshots and message previews.

Where your input is processed

This tool processes your input in this browser. Your text and files are not uploaded to UseFreeTools. Check this tool's limits for anything it may save on your device.

What happens between a tap and a chat

A click-to-chat link carries two things: the number as digits and the optional text. WhatsApp reads them, opens the chat for that number on whichever device the visitor is using, and leaves the text in the message box as a draft. That draft belongs to the person sending it, so a link can suggest the first sentence without taking the decision away from them. The short wa.me address answers with a redirect to the api.whatsapp.com address, which is the form the desktop apps expect. Since the number and the text are part of the address, anyone who can read the link can read both, so treat a link holding a customer number the way you would treat the number itself.

Questions about WhatsApp Link Generator

Does this page send the message?

No. It only builds the link. WhatsApp opens the chat with your text already in the box, and someone still has to press send. If you close the page without opening the link, nothing was sent and nothing was stored.

Why was my phone number refused?

Three reasons cover most cases: fewer than 7 or more than 15 digits, a letter or symbol beyond the usual separators, or a leading 0, which is a national prefix rather than a country code. Replace 05550100100 with 15550100100 and try again.

Can I check whether the number has WhatsApp first?

No. This page cannot see WhatsApp's account list, so it cannot confirm the number is registered. Open the link on a phone: WhatsApp either opens the chat or says the number is not on WhatsApp.

Which link style should I use?

Use the wa.me short link when the address is printed or pasted into a caption, because it is shorter. Use the api.whatsapp.com form when a tool or a person needs the phone parameter spelled out. The result shows both, so you can swap at any time.

Can I put the link in an email?

Yes. It is an ordinary web address, so it works anywhere a link can be clicked. Test the published copy on a phone, because the desktop and mobile apps show the pre-filled text differently.
