How to use Slug Generator
- Enter one title, or choose One title per line and paste a list.
- Choose the word separator, the letter case and the longest slug, then decide whether common short words should be removed.
- Copy one slug, or inspect every bulk result and its duplicate notes before downloading CSV or plain text.
Example: Slug Generator
Make a slug for a headline about coffee brewing.
Options
- Separator
- Hyphens are the common choice for public web addresses. Underscores and dots suit systems that expect them, and repeated separators collapse into one.
- Letter case and length
- Lowercase avoids two addresses that differ only by case. The longest slug counts every character including separators, and the cut happens at the last complete word that fits.
- Common short words
- Removing a, the and similar function words shortens a slug while the words that carry meaning keep their order. The removal never leaves the slug empty.
- Accented letters
- By default an accented Latin letter folds to its plain form, so café becomes cafe. Switching that off keeps the accent, and letters from other scripts are always kept as they are.
Supported inputs and limits
Where your input is processed
This tool processes your input in this browser. Your text and files are not uploaded to UseFreeTools. Check this tool's limits for anything it may save on your device.
A slug is one path segment, not a full URL
This page builds only the final part of an address, such as 10-best-coffee-brewing-methods-for-2026. The domain, folder and any tracking parameters stay outside it. Paste the slug into the full address and open it before publishing, because a slug that reads well on its own can still collide with an existing page or a reserved route.
Questions about Slug Generator
Does this change the accented letters in my title?
By default, café becomes cafe. Turn on Keep accented Latin letters to retain the accent itself. Letters from other scripts keep their marks in either mode.
What happens to Chinese, Arabic or Bengali text?
Those letters are kept as they are. The slug will hold Unicode characters, the browser turns them into percent-encoded text in the address bar, and no transliteration or romanization is applied.
Why is my slug shorter than the title?
Punctuation, spaces and repeated separators are removed, common short words can be dropped, and anything past the longest-slug limit is cut at the last complete word that fits.
Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens are the common choice for public web addresses. Use underscores or dots only where the system that reads the URL expects them.
Will bulk mode make duplicate slugs unique?
It reports all source lines that generate the same slug. It adds no suffix automatically. Change those titles or edit the results and check them against the site where you intend to use them.
