Calculate tip controls

Showing an example. Edit to see your own.

The total shown on the receipt. Enter the pre-tax amount only when the bill really has no tax on it.

18%

Enter your own tip rate. The tool suggests no amount and does not know the tipping custom where you are.

0%

Leave at 0 when the bill has no tax, or when you want to tip on the full amount.

On, the tip is charged on the pre-tax amount. Off, it is charged on the full bill.

Round the share each person pays

The exact share is always shown next to the rounded one, so nothing goes missing.

How to split the bill

Unequal shares follow the weights below, so one person can pay more than another.

One person per line as a name and a weight, such as Ana, 1. A weight from 0.000001 to 1000000 is accepted; a weight of 2 pays twice a weight of 1, and 100 people is the limit.

How to use Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount shown on the receipt, including any sales tax already charged.
  2. Choose a tip rate and the tax percentage already in the bill. Select equal shares or enter one name, weight per line for weighted shares.
  3. Set the tip base and share rounding. The tip, total and each person's share update as you change the fields.

Example: Tip Calculator

Split a tax-free 120.00 bill among three people with an 18% voluntary tip.

You add
Bill amount, tax included: 120.00. Tip percentage: 18. Sales tax percentage already in the bill: 0. Work out the tip on the amount before tax: on. Split between how many people: 3. Round the per-person share: Exact (2 decimals).
You get
The tip is 21.60, the total with tip is 141.60 and the exact share for each of three people is 47.20. The tax amount is 0.00, so the pre-tax tip base is 120.00.

Options

Bill and sales tax
The bill field is the amount after any sales tax already on the receipt. When you enter that tax rate and select a pre-tax tip, the tool backs tax out of the bill before calculating the tip.
Tip base
You choose whether the tip percentage applies to the amount before tax or the full receipt amount. If the receipt has no tax, both choices use the same base.
Per-person rounding
Equal mode keeps its existing displayed-share remainder notice. Weighted exact mode allocates cents to sum to the displayed total. Round-up modes round each total share upward and show the amount collected across the group.

Supported inputs and limits

Bill amounts accept 0 to 1,000,000; tip and included-tax rates accept 0% to 100%. Equal or weighted splitting supports 1 to 100 people. Weights must be from 0.000001 to 1,000,000, names up to 100 characters and the list up to 20,000 characters. A weight of 2 receives twice the unrounded share of a weight of 1. One tax rate applies to the whole entered bill; this does not infer unequal orders, item-level taxes, service charges or discounts. Exact weighted shares distribute cents by largest remainder, with earlier lines breaking ties, so they sum to the displayed total. Upward rounding applies to each total share and can produce an overage, which is disclosed. You choose the tip rate.

Sources and assumptions

Checked 2026-09-26. The calculator treats the entered bill as tax-included and, when asked for a pre-tax tip, divides it by one plus the entered tax rate. Tip = selected base times your chosen percentage; total = bill plus tip; exact share = total divided by people. The tip percentage is always the one you enter: the tool suggests no amount and knows no local custom. This is a voluntary tip calculation. The IRS distinguishes voluntary tips from required service charges, which can affect a real receipt. The tool offers no tax or financial advice.

Questions about Tip Calculator

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

You can choose either basis. If you want a pre-tax calculation, enter the sales tax percentage already included in your bill and leave the pre-tax option on. The tool does not set a tipping rule for you.

What if a service charge is already on the receipt?

Check the receipt before adding a separate tip. A required service charge is different from a voluntary tip, and this tool does not identify or remove it from the entered amount.

Why can rounded shares add up to more than the bill?

Rounding each person's share upward can create an extra cent or more across the group. Even an equal share shown to cents can leave a small remainder. The result shows the group total so you can decide how to divide it.

How do unequal shares work?

Enter a name and positive weight on each line, such as Ana,1 and Ben,2. Ben receives twice the unrounded share. Exact mode distributes any remaining cents by the largest fractional remainder, with earlier lines breaking ties. Check the result against the orders you mean to divide.
