How to use Shared Expense Settlement
- Enter one person per line and the expense CSV.
- Use | between names sharing an expense.
- Review each person’s balance and the proposed settlement transfers.
Example: Shared Expense Settlement
Settle two shared payments in one currency.
Options
- People, one name per line
- Names identify participants and must match the CSV spelling. Use one common currency; the calculation does not perform exchange conversion.
- Expenses CSV
- Each row records one payer and one amount. List only the named participants who share that expense in split_with, separated by |; an empty or unknown name is not inferred.

A transfer list settles balances rather than replaying purchases
The tool compares what each person paid with their assigned shares. A debtor may pay someone who paid a different original bill, because the transfer settles the group’s net balance. Check the participant set on every expense before relying on the result; an omitted person changes that division.
Small indivisible amounts need an explicit check
Amounts are divided in cents, so some splits cannot assign identical shares to every person. Review the reported balance and allocation when a payment has an odd cent. The suggested list is one settlement plan, not a promise of the globally fewest transfers, and it neither sends money nor records that a transfer happened.
Questions about Shared Expense Settlement
Can one expense include only some people?
Yes. List those people in that row’s split_with field.
How are leftover cents assigned?
They go to people in the row’s declared split order.
Are the transfers guaranteed to use the fewest payments?
No. They settle the balances with a greedy method, without a minimum-payment guarantee.
