Build sitemap controls

What to do

Build makes a sitemap from a list. Check reads sitemap XML you paste.

Used by Build. Each line must be a full https address on the same site.

Applied to every address in the built sitemap. Leave empty to omit it.

Google ignores this hint, so leaving it out keeps the file smaller.

Used by Check. The reader handles the sitemap subset only and never fetches these addresses.

How to use Sitemap XML Generator and Validator

  1. Choose Build a sitemap and paste one full https address per line, or choose Check XML and paste a sitemap you already have.
  2. For a build, add a last modified date, change frequency or priority only if the sitemap should carry them.
  3. Select the action and read the file, the counts and any line that was skipped.
  4. For a build, save the result as sitemap.xml, upload it, and submit its address in the search console for the site.

Example: Sitemap XML Generator and Validator

Turn three page addresses into a small sitemap with one element per address.

You add
Mode: Build a sitemap. Addresses: https://example.com/, https://example.com/about, https://example.com/blog/first-post. No last modified date, change frequency or priority.
You get
A urlset with 3 url entries, each holding one loc element, and a result of 3 addresses written, 0 repeated addresses and 0 lines skipped.

Supported inputs and limits

A build reads up to 10,000 pasted lines, a list of up to 100,000 characters, and a check reads XML up to 500,000 characters or 200,000 elements. Each address must be a complete http or https address, no longer than 2,048 characters, percent-encoded, with no space and no # fragment. The reader handles one urlset or sitemapindex root in the sitemap namespace with loc, lastmod, changefreq and priority. Comments, CDATA and the XML declaration are read; DTDs, custom entities and namespace prefixes are refused. The protocol allows 50,000 addresses and 50 MB uncompressed in one file, and a checked file over that count is flagged. Nothing here crawls the listed addresses or submits the file, so the check cannot tell you whether an address returns a page, whether it is canonical, or whether a search engine will index it.

What a sitemap can and cannot say

A sitemap is an index of addresses, not a publishing step. It helps a crawler find URLs and read a last modified date, and search engines treat that as one input among many. Listing an address cannot make a thin or blocked page indexable, and leaving an address out does not remove it from results when other pages link to it. After you upload the file, confirm it loads at the address you declared in robots.txt and review the coverage report for the addresses the engine passed over.

Questions about Sitemap XML Generator and Validator

Does listing a page in a sitemap make it appear in search results?

No. A sitemap helps a crawler discover addresses and read a last modified date. It is not a publishing step and not a ranking signal. A listed address still has to be reachable, return a normal response and follow the search engine's own rules before it can be indexed.

How many addresses can one sitemap hold?

The protocol allows 50,000 addresses and a file up to 50 MB uncompressed. This page builds up to 10,000 from one pasted list and warns when a checked file lists more than 50,000, so split larger sets across several sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index.

Why was one of my lines skipped?

The line was empty after trimming, repeated an address already accepted, or broke a rule such as starting with https, staying under 2,048 characters or carrying no space and no # fragment. Skipped lines are listed under the result with their line number.

Does the check open the addresses in the file?

No. The XML is read in this browser and the checker does not request the listed addresses, so the check describes the shape of the file and its values, not the live pages.
