A plain number such as 100 or 1.6e-3. Luminance cannot be negative.

The nit is another name for the candela per square metre.

How to use Luminance Converter

  1. Enter a nonnegative luminance value.
  2. Choose the source and destination luminance units.
  3. Convert and copy the result with its unit.

Example: Luminance Converter

Convert a stilb value into the SI unit.

You add
Value: 1. From: stilb. To: cd/m².
You get
1 stilb = 10000 cd/m².

Options

Luminance unit
A nit is a candela per square metre. Other supported units convert the supplied luminance without changing a source measurement into lux.
Decimal places
Check the luminance unit with every rounded number, especially when changing from a small candela-per-area value. The selector offers 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 places without estimating a screen measurement.

Supported inputs and limits

Luminance units only. A nit equals one cd/m². No illuminance-to-luminance model, viewing geometry, display calibration or brightness recommendation is included. Values accept at most 64 characters, 40 significant digits, 20 fractional places and magnitude 10¹⁸. Scientific notation has at most two exponent digits. Display rounding offers 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 decimal places; small nonzero results stay visible.

Luminance is not illuminance

A stilb is a candela per square centimetre, so 1 stilb equals 10000 cd/m². Luminance and illuminance are different quantities; screen brightness alone cannot be converted to room illumination with a unit factor.

Questions about Luminance Converter

Is one nit the same as one cd/m²?

Yes. Nit is a common name for candela per square metre.

Can I convert a lux reading here?

Lux is an illuminance unit. Converting it into luminance requires information about a source or surface beyond a scale factor.

Does this compare perceived brightness?

No. Perception depends on context, adaptation and other properties. This page converts a supplied physical quantity.
