How to use Illuminance Converter
- Enter a nonnegative illuminance value.
- Choose lux or foot-candles as the source and destination.
- Convert and copy the value with its unit.
Example: Illuminance Converter
Convert one foot-candle.
Options
- Illuminance unit
- Lux and foot-candles describe illumination incident on a surface. They do not describe a source brightness or the reflected luminance of a screen.
- Decimal places
- A lux-to-foot-candle conversion generally produces a fractional result. Choose 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 places for the displayed illuminance; the setting does not model lighting distribution.

Surface illumination has its own quantity
One foot-candle is one lumen per square foot and gives about 10.76391042 lux. The conversion changes area units; it does not predict lighting distribution, fixture placement or an appropriate illumination level.
Questions about Illuminance Converter
Are lux and lumens the same?
No. Lumens measure luminous flux. Lux measures flux per square metre of receiving area.
Can lux become nits?
Not from a unit factor alone. Nits describe luminance and depend on the surface or light source and viewing direction.
Why is one foot-candle more than one lux?
A foot-candle is one lumen per square foot. A square foot is smaller than a square metre, so the numeric lux value is larger.
