How to use Percentile and Quartile Calculator

  1. Paste the numbers separated by spaces, commas or line breaks.
  2. Enter the percentile between 0 and 100.
  3. Choose linear interpolation or nearest-rank.
  4. Review quartiles, endpoints and the method-specific result.

Example: Percentile and Quartile Calculator

Percentile and Quartile Calculator: 25th percentile: 1.75.

You add
Values: 1,2,3,4 Percentile (0 to 100): 25 Method: type7
You get
25th percentile: 1.75. Method: R type 7, interpolated at (n−1)p; p = percentile / 100. Results are shown to 10 decimal places when needed. First quartile (25%) | 1.75 Median (50%) | 2.5 Third quartile (75%) | 3.25

Options

Quantile method
Type 7 interpolates between sorted observations. Type 1 selects a nearest-rank observation; small samples can give visibly different quartiles.
Percentile percentage
Enter a value from 0 through 100. The value is a position in the ordered sample, not the percentage of observations equal to the returned number.

Supported inputs and limits

1–5,000 finite values with magnitude at most 10^12. Type 7 uses position (n−1)p in the sorted zero-based array and linear interpolation; type 1 uses the nearest-rank empirical rule. Endpoints return the minimum and maximum. Different accepted methods can give different quartiles; display rounding is stated. Numeric input text is capped at 100,000 characters and 20 fraction digits per value. Decimal arithmetic is used; displayed results round to 10 decimal places when needed, with tiny nonzero values retained.

Keep the method with a reported quartile

Two applications can use different quantile conventions on the same data. Preserve the selected method when sharing the result or comparing it with a spreadsheet. Repeated observations stay in the sample and influence ranks; they are not removed as duplicate records.

Questions about Percentile and Quartile Calculator

Why does another calculator give a different quartile?

Sample quantiles have several conventions. Match its method and data-cleaning rules before comparing results.

Does the tool discard repeated numbers?

No. Each entered value is an observation, so repeated values remain in the sorted sample.

What do the 0th and 100th percentiles return?

The minimum and maximum entered values, respectively, for both supported methods.
