How to use Moving Average Calculator

  1. Paste the numeric observations in their original order.
  2. Choose a window and simple or exponential averaging.
  3. Read the EMA smoothing factor and seed convention if selected.
  4. Inspect starting blank rows and download the calculated series.

Example: Moving Average Calculator

Moving Average Calculator: EMA with window 3; 2 leading results unavailable.

You add
Values in order: 10,20,30,80,50 Window: 3 Average: ema
You get
EMA with window 3; 2 leading results unavailable. EMA alpha = 2 / (3 + 1) = 0.5. The first complete-window mean seeds EMA. Leading unavailable averages are blank. Values are shown to 10 decimal places when needed. 1 | 10 | 2 | 20 | 3 | 30 | 20

Options

Sequence order
Paste observations in time or task order. Sorting the values changes the trailing windows and the resulting series.
EMA convention
The first complete window supplies the seed mean. Later points use alpha = 2/(window + 1), rather than seeding from the first single observation.

Supported inputs and limits

1–5,000 finite values with magnitude at most 10^12. The window is 1–1,000 and cannot exceed the series length. SMA averages each complete trailing window. EMA uses alpha 2/(window+1) and starts with the first complete-window mean. Unavailable leading rows stay blank. This smooths supplied observations and does not forecast returns or future values. Numeric input text is capped at 100,000 characters and 20 fraction digits per value. Decimal arithmetic is used; displayed results round to 10 decimal places when needed, with tiny nonzero values retained.

Blank leading rows are not zero averages

Rows before the first complete window have no result under this convention. Leave those CSV cells blank rather than replacing them with zero for a chart. Moving averages smooth entered observations; they do not establish a trend will continue or predict the next value.

Questions about Moving Average Calculator

Why are early output rows blank?

The selected method waits for a complete first window. Those rows have no average under this page's convention.

How is the first EMA value chosen?

It is the arithmetic mean of the first full window. Later values use the displayed smoothing factor and the preceding EMA.

Does changing the order matter?

Yes. A moving average is based on sequence order. Sort or reorder the source only when that matches your intended series.
