How to use Hours Worked Calculator
- Write one shift per line as the start time, the end time and the unpaid break in minutes, such as 09:00 17:30 30.
- Repeat for every shift in the period. An end time earlier than the start time is read as an overnight shift.
- Choose the output format: hours and minutes, decimal hours, or both.
- Each shift and the total update as you change the lines.
Example: Hours Worked Calculator
Total a short week that includes an unpaid break and one overnight shift.
Options
- Shift lines
- Each line holds a start time, an end time and an optional unpaid break in minutes. Times use the 24-hour clock. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift finishes the next day.
- Output format
- Hours and minutes keep the total readable, decimal hours suit a spreadsheet, and the combined option prints both. The exact total in minutes is always shown with the result.

Why the total is a duration, not a clock reading
A shift list measures elapsed time, so the answer is a running total rather than a time of day. Adding a 22:00 to 06:00 shift as clock faces would end at 06:00 and lose eight hours, and converting each shift to a decimal before adding it invites rounding errors that grow with the list. This page adds whole minutes first, then converts once, and reports the minute total next to the decimal figure so the exact value is always visible.
Questions about Hours Worked Calculator
How do I record an overnight shift?
Write the start and end times as they appear on the clock, such as 22:00 06:00, and the tool adds the hours across midnight. Any end time earlier than the start time is treated as the next day.
What does the third number on a line mean?
It is the unpaid break in minutes. 09:00 17:30 30 means a half-hour break, and a line with only two times has no break at all.
Does the total account for overtime or pay?
No. The result is time only, with the exact minute count and a two-decimal conversion. Pay rates, overtime multipliers and rounding rules belong to your payroll system.
Can I paste rows from a spreadsheet?
Yes, as long as each row keeps the start time, the end time and the optional break together. Spaces, tabs and commas all separate the values.
