How to use Countdown to a Date

  1. Choose the date you are counting to.
  2. Set the time on that date, or leave it at 00:00 for midnight.
  3. Add an optional label if a name helps you remember what the date is.
  4. Select Start countdown, or switch the display to whole days if a single number is easier to read.
  5. Pause or reset at any time. Where supported, use Sound, Full screen and a screen wake lock while it runs.

Example: Countdown to a Date

Count to a fixed date with a name attached to it.

You add
Count down to this date: 2099-12-31. Time on that date: 00:00. What are you waiting for?: Century close. Display: Days, hours, minutes and seconds.
You get
The panel shows the label Century close and counts the remaining days, hours, minutes and seconds to 2099-12-31 at 00:00. The result repeats the target, the time zone the device reports and the whole number of days left, so the count still works whenever the page is opened.

Options

Date and time
The countdown measures to one local moment on your device. A daylight saving change moves the remaining time by an hour for dates on the other side of it, which is why the result names the moment and the zone rather than only the day.
Display
Days, hours, minutes and seconds breaks the remaining time into each unit. Whole days rounds down to complete days, which suits counting sleeps or the days left before a trip or a deadline.
Finish controls
After you start the countdown, the browser can play a short chime at the target. Sound, a screen wake lock and full screen depend on browser support and permission. The time still updates when those features are unavailable.

Supported inputs and limits

Dates run from 1900-01-01 to 2100-01-01, with the time read on the 24-hour clock. The countdown uses the device clock and its reported time zone, so visitors in other zones can see different remaining times. A local time skipped by a daylight saving clock change is refused. A past target is reported as passed. Labels stop at 60 characters. The finish chime, screen wake lock and full screen depend on browser support; a hidden or sleeping tab may announce the finish late, but the displayed remaining time catches up. Nothing you type is stored or sent as a tool input.

Why the countdown names a moment, not only a date

Midnight arrives at a different instant in every time zone, and a clock change can shift a local reading by an hour. This page counts to a date and a time that are read on your device, then reports the zone it used, so two visitors comparing their screens can see why the remaining time differs. The remaining time is worked out again from the clock on each update instead of subtracting one second at a time, which keeps it accurate after sleep.

Questions about Countdown to a Date

Which time zone does the countdown use?

The zone your device reports, which the result names. If the event belongs to another zone, adjust the time you enter by the difference before you start.

What happens once the date arrives?

The display stops at zero, the state line says the moment has passed, and the counter no longer updates. Reset and pick a new date when you need another countdown.

Can I count to a date next year or further out?

Yes, as far as 2100-01-01. The display shows the whole number of days first, so a long countdown stays readable.

Does the countdown keep running when I close the tab?

No. The page recalculates from the clock whenever it is open, so the remaining time is right when you come back, but nothing runs in the background.

Will the countdown make a sound when it finishes?

It can play a short chime after you start it, if your browser allows sound. Use Sound on or Sound off in the panel. Some browsers mute background tabs, so keep the page visible when you need to hear the finish.
