How to use Image Alt Text
- Choose a clear image and describe its role on the page.
- Select content or decorative use based on what the image contributes.
- Generate the description, then check each visible detail and edit the alt text for the page.
Example: Image Alt Text
Describe a product image without adding unseen specifications.
Options
- Page context
- Explain what nearby text already says and what the image contributes. The same image can need different alt text in different contexts.
- Decorative purpose
- An image used only for decoration receives an empty alt value. Decide this from the page context rather than from whether the photograph is attractive.
Supported inputs and limits
- One PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 5 MiB, 12 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per side.
- The service decodes the image and removes metadata before sending it.
- Small text, hidden details and exact locations may be misread.
- Identity and sensitive personal traits are not a supported purpose.
Where your input is processed
Your input is uploaded to this site and sent to a configured AI provider. If a provider fails, the request may be sent to the next eligible provider. Check its result before use. Private inputs and results expire within one hour and are excluded from site backups; temporary files are removed by scheduled cleanup. Provider retention rules may differ. Avoid submitting passwords or highly sensitive information.
Describe what the reader needs
Start with the role of the image rather than a list of everything the model noticed. For a product photo, the visible shape or color may matter. For a chart, the message and data need a separate description. Remove guesses about people, places and unseen qualities. Read the draft alongside nearby text and keep the information that helps someone understand or use the page.
Questions about Image Alt Text
Should every detail go in the alt text?
Include details needed to understand the image in context. Long descriptions can hold extra information; avoid repeating a nearby caption word for word.
When should alt text be empty?
Use empty alt text when the image adds no information and serves only decoration. A linked image or functional icon usually needs text describing its purpose.
Does the generated text make a page accessible?
It is one draft to review. Keyboard access, structure, contrast, labels and the surrounding content still need their own checks.
