How to use Typing Speed Test

  1. Choose a 30, 60 or 120 second test and an easy, medium or hard passage.
  2. Press Start typing test, then type the passage above the box. The clock begins with your first keystroke, and the readout shows the time left, your speed and your accuracy.
  3. The test ends when you finish the passage, when the time runs out, or when you press Stop test. The result says which of those happened.

Example: Typing Speed Test

Finish the easy passage well inside the time limit.

You add
Test length: 60 seconds. Passage: Easy. The passage is typed exactly, all 69 characters, in 20 seconds.
You get
The summary reads "Typed 69 of 69 characters in 20 seconds: 41.4 gross words per minute, 41.4 net, and 100% accuracy." The text block adds "The whole passage was typed." and the table shows 69 correct characters, 20 seconds elapsed and Whole passage typed as the outcome.

Supported inputs and limits

Three lengths, 30, 60 and 120 seconds, and two passages per difficulty. Speed is worked out as five typed characters to a word, over the time between the first keystroke and the end of the test. Gross speed counts every character typed; net speed counts only the characters that match the passage at the same position, so a character you correct before the end counts as correct. Paste and drag-and-drop are turned off, and the box stops accepting input when the test ends, so the measurement stays real keystrokes. The clock reads the passage deadline, not the moment a repaint happened, so a slow frame cannot stretch the measured time. Typed text is capped at 4,000 characters. Nothing is saved or sent: the result is for this page only, and no account or history keeps your score.

Why the timing is taken from the page clock

A test that counts seconds on a screen can drift if the browser is busy or the tab is hidden. This page reads a clock that only moves forward, so a late repaint cannot add time, and an expiry is recorded at the deadline rather than at the frame that noticed it. The live numbers are repainted often so they look smooth, while the text announced to a screen reader is rewritten about once a second to stay useful instead of noisy.

Questions about Typing Speed Test

How is words per minute calculated here?

Five characters count as one word, which is the usual typing convention. The time comes from the page clock between your first keystroke and the end of the test, not from anything you type into a field, so an entered number cannot inflate the result.

What counts as a mistake?

Accuracy compares your text with the passage position by position. One wrong character lowers the score by one character, and an extra character past the end of the passage counts as an error too. A character you fix before the test ends counts as correct in the final result.

Why can't I paste the passage?

Paste and drop are disabled so the result reflects typing rather than copying. A pasted passage would finish instantly and report a speed that says nothing about your typing.

What happens if I stop the test early?

Pressing Stop test ends the run there. The result reports what you had typed up to that moment and says the test was stopped, which is different from the timer reaching its deadline or from finishing the whole passage.
