Reverse the text controls

Paste or type the text you want to reverse.

Character mode reverses the text itself. Word and line mode move whole words or lines and leave their letters in order.

How to use Reverse Text

  1. Paste your text into the Text box.
  2. Choose Characters, Words or Lines in Reverse by.
  3. The reversed text updates as you change the input.
  4. Copy the result, and read the note about spacing or a kept line break.

Example: Reverse Text

Reverse a short string that holds one joined emoji.

You add
Text: the letter A, then a woman technologist emoji, then the letter B. Reverse by: Characters.
You get
The summary reports Reversed 3 characters and returns B, the same emoji, then A. The emoji stays in one piece because character mode moves whole grapheme clusters.

Options

Reverse by
Characters moves the text itself and keeps a joined emoji or an accented letter whole. Words moves whole tokens and leaves the letters inside each word in order. Lines moves whole lines and leaves the text of each line unchanged.

Supported inputs and limits

Input is capped at 200,000 characters. Character mode needs the browser's grapheme segmenter, so an older browser receives an error instead of a broken letter. Word mode splits on any run of whitespace and rejoins the words with a single space, so the original spacing and line breaks are not restored. Line mode keeps the line-break style it found and puts a line break at the end of the text back at the end. The input you typed is not changed; the reversed copy appears in the result.

An emoji is one visible unit

A JavaScript string is made of code units, and reversing those units can tear a joined emoji or an accented letter apart. Character mode moves grapheme clusters instead, so the pieces that belong together move together. Line mode keeps each line's text in order and changes only the order of the lines.

Questions about Reverse Text

Why does character mode say my browser cannot reverse the text?

Character mode uses the browser's own text segmentation to find what a reader sees as one character. A browser without that support would cut a joined emoji or an accented letter in half, so the tool refuses the run. Use Words or Lines, or update the browser.

Why did the spaces and line breaks change in word mode?

Word mode splits on any run of whitespace and joins the reversed words back with a single space. Extra spaces, tabs and line breaks are treated as separators, so they do not survive as themselves. Use line mode if the layout has to stay.

What happens to the Enter at the end of my text?

One line break at the very end stays at the end. Moving it to the front would put a blank line before the whole result, which is not what reversing a piece of text means.

Does one emoji count as one character?

Yes in character mode. A joined emoji such as a person with a laptop is several code units but one visible character, and the count follows what you see.

Is the text I typed changed?

No. The tool reads your input and writes the reversed copy into the result box. Your original text stays exactly as you typed it until you replace it.
