How to use Web Font Stack Generator

  1. Choose a system sans, serif or monospace stack.
  2. Optionally enter up to four comma-separated family names your page provides.
  3. Review the local sample and copy the font-family declaration.

Example: Web Font Stack Generator

Use the system sans stack.

You add
Preset: system sans. Custom family: empty.
You get
The declaration uses the system sans fallback stack and ends with sans-serif.

Supported inputs and limits

Named presets and up to four custom family names of 64 characters each, escaped as CSS text. No font files are uploaded or downloaded. Rendering depends on available fonts; the tool does not detect which font rendered each character.

Where your input is processed

This tool processes your input in this browser. Your text and files are not uploaded to UseFreeTools. Check this tool's limits for anything it may save on your device.

A fallback is part of the design

Check line breaks and spacing when the preferred font is unavailable. A stack keeps text visible, but substitute fonts can have different widths and heights.

Questions about Web Font Stack Generator

Will entering a font name install it?

No. Your page must provide that font or the visitor’s device must already have it. The browser moves through the fallback stack otherwise.

Can different characters use different fonts?

Yes. A font may lack a character, so the browser can choose a later fallback for that character.

Why is a family name quoted?

Quoting and escaping keeps spaces or punctuation inside one family name. The final generic family remains unquoted.
